Make a Wish Foundation

A blog written for Truebeck Construction internal communications:

Full-time Team Truebeck, part-time wish granter—the role Brian Walz, James Shimamoto, Mike Smith, Dave Walsh, Nick Pera Jr, Andrew Willard, and Truebeck’s self-perform concrete team can claim after fulfilling Isaiah’s wish through the Make a Wish Foundation.

In the midst of the most extreme circumstances, children between the ages of two and a half and eighteen who have critical illnesses look to the Make a Wish Foundation with hope, joy, and enthusiasm as they look forward to their wish experience.

Isaiah’s enthusiasm was no exception. Arguably one of the Golden State Warriors biggest fans, it was no surprise that Isaiah chose to have a half-basketball court built in his backyard.

A Wish Come True. Team Truebeck partnered with Goodfellow Construction to install a backyard basketball court complete with a custom paint job and personal hoop for Isaiah. With most of the scope requiring the coordination and installation of rebar and concrete, the Truebeck self-perform team was integral to the project. Before the court’s final touches, the team had to excavate, compact, and grade the backyard, install base rock and rebar, and pour concrete.

But that’s not all they did. As our precon team knows all too well, funding is as equally important as the build—considering Make a Wish is dependent on voluntary donations from the public and corporate sponsorships to grant wishes. Stepping into their role of wish granter, Brian and James 10-4. led the charge in raising donations from trade partners.

“I think it’s a fantastic organization. Working in construction, we are in a unique position where we can offer valuable services for wish projects that involve a physical build. It’s great to be able to meet the family, discuss what they want, work through the design, and install something that fulfills a Make a Wish kid’s dream,” said Brian.
Who wouldn't want to be a wish granter?
